Born in Scotland, attorney Andrew Neill (1813-1883) studied law in Willsburg, West Virginia. After a serving as a probate judge in Mississippi, he moved to Texas in 1836. As a captain in the Texas Army during the Republic of Texas, Neill participated in an 1842 expedition against Rafael Vásquez and was later captured by General Adrián Woll and taken to Mexico. Neill escaped, returning to Texas by the next January, and married Agnes Nancy Brown in 1844. During the Civil War, he serve...
